Orco kawkachun. This is the name given, from now on, to three shoes found at the base of the Llullaillaco Volcano. In Quechua, orco means “mountain” and kawkachun means “shoes of the foot,” so the professionals from the Museum of High Mountain Archaeology (MAAM) gave this name to something that until now didn’t exist. They were found by an expedition in 2010, but due to a lack of sterile materials at the time, nothing was touched until the following year, when they set out again to recover them. Archaeologist Christian Vitry, anthropologist Diego Sberna, architect Mario Lazarovich, and park ranger Gonzalo Cristófani were the privileged mountaineers and scholars who achieved this discovery, unique in the world to date, as there are no precedents in Peru, Bolivia, or Chile, according to contacts with museums in those countries.
