Crioconservation

The strict and technologically controlled environmental conditions allow it to present a collection with particular characteristics due to its exceptional conservation conditions. The exhibition lighting system is controlled by computers that regulate the intensity of the light in the presence of people.

To ensure a good conservation state of the collection, the environment in the exhibition rooms is controlled automatically, keeping the air filtered and cleaned, at a constant temperature of 18 ° C and 45%.relative humidity.

In 2001, the Cryoconservation project began in order to preserve study and present to the public the Llullaillaco children bodies. The project was in charge of Argentinians professionals directed by Eng. Mario Bernaski and three conditioning factors were considered: environment features, comparable cases analysis and bodies evaluation.

Cryoconservation guidelines followed the specific conditions of high mountains such as low temperatures, low atmospheric pressure, low oxygen level and absence of light.

This conservation technique uses concepts of low temperatures, indirect cold transfer, thermal stability and modified atmosphere with permanent electronic records.

The Llullaillaco children’s bodies are kept in specially designed chambers which allow a panoramic view of the bodies. Inside their atmosphere is modified, reducing the oxygen content to 2% in a stable environment of -20 ° Celsius, with UV and IR filtered lighting, which guarantees the correct presentation and preservation of the children. This type of conservation technique is unique in the world.

The use of new technologies, innovation and modernization of resources and the permanent updating and research, position the Cryoconservation Laboratory as a national and international benchmark on conservation and presentation of mummified bodies.
